Psst! Hey, you!
Yes, you.Want to run Omeka on a local server and have your own private archive that isn’t accessible to the internet, but is accessible on your own computer? Like, maybe you want to learn Omeka but you don’t want to be limited by a free trial or Omeka’s cloud hosting service? Or maybe you have a bunch of pictures you want to access quickly for your dissertation, but don’t have permission or legal rights to put them online? Or Maybe you don’t want to pony up the money to host an archive that only you are using? Or maybe you are working in the field or on the go and want to have your very own private database that isn’t Filemaker? Well, in the last case, you might want to check out Django, Rails, or even Drupal on a similar local web-stack, but today I’m going to talk about how to run Omeka with Apache 2 and Mysql on a Virtual Machine that is running on your desktop or laptop.

Last year when many of us were spending a lot of time overanalyzing various parts of our lives and dwellings because of COVID, I noticed a slab of cement in the front yard of my house that looked like it had some writing on it, but I couldn't read it.

In this installment, I attempt to make some of the most common and basic pigments available to ancient artisans using colorful dirt, coffee filters, and various containers.

Last fall, I was writing a section of my dissertaion about the actual craft of making coffins. I ended up reading a lot of papers on conservation of Egyptian coffins, and I had conversations via email with a lot of people who are really knowledgeable about how coffins were decorated (whose work I'll mention further in later entries). However, if you are going to make a small coffin or cartonnage, you had best have a "mummy" to go in it! So off I went to the discount store to find a cheap Barbie-knockoff to wrap.

Hello, I'm Kea--a PhD student in the Department of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Berkeley. I specialize in Egyptology, and right now my passion is funerary arts, specifically coffin production. I'm also a digital humanist and am always looking for new ways to use technology, especially image processing, to answer my research questions.
